In an ideal world, children and young adults are able to enroll in their dream university. Despite circumstances, they push through and succeed in getting the best quality education there is in the country-- with all the fancy equipment and well ventilated rooms.
In an ideal world, students often imagine themselves to be always diligent in their pursuit of a degree. There are often lines uttered like: "Sisiguraduhin ko ngayong sem mas mataas ang grades ko" This sem, I'll make sure that my grades are high. "Magsisipag na nga ako ngayon sem." This sem I'll work harder.
In an ideal world, students often get the teachers that they want--teachers who are "cool" or teachers who are easy. "Sana si Sir... na lang. Lahat tayo pasado dun." Hopefully we get Sir... He always passes everyone.
Ladies and gentlemen, I am well aware that these are thoughts that often crosses your mind with every beginning of the academic year. However, this isn't the ideal world. We don't always get what we want; nor can we consistently diligently pursue our goals. But that's alright... C'est la vie. That's life. That is humanity.
More often than not, we have to make compromises in life.
You might not be going to your dream university, but be glad that you're going to college. There are more people who cannot even afford to do that.
You probably won't be the dream student you hope you were (believe me, this saddens me more than it does you). You will try but you'll get wrapped up in all the work and your life outside of schoolwork; and you'll get exhausted and sleepy... burnt out.
You probably wish you didn't have me as a teacher. But hey, tough luck. I am not going anywhere.
I have been in the same situation as you now. It was not so long ago that I was taking my undergraduate degree. So let me give you some tips to help you out in my class and perhaps you might use this for your other classes.
Tip 1 : As much as possible, don't ever come to class late. It leaves a bad impression on teachers, especially the strict ones and they will definitely drag your grades down a few points.
Tip 2 : Say at least one memorable thing for recitation. There are many of you and one of us in a class, in order for you to be best remembered and to get higher grades, it is important that you say something in class.
Tip 3 : Don't think you've outwitted your teacher. We know that you're cheating, when you are; we just don't always have proof. But when we do catch you, you're done for.
Tip 4 : Study long before the exams, even if it's little by little. This way, you won't have to stay up the night before. You'll be able to answer questions during an exam clearer and faster when you've had enough sleep. Plus, it reduces the chance of falling asleep while taking the exam.
Tip 5 : Always be respectful of your teachers and classmates, even if you disagree with their ideas. If you are too assertive, no one would want to work with you. In class, you don't just work with your classmates, you're also working with your teacher. Nobody likes the "mayabang" proud.
Tip 6 : Give yourself a break from time to time. Not necessarily a snack. You could go karaoke singing with friends, have a meal at Jollibee with your barkada, go window shopping or whatever. Remember you're only human. You need to rest your brain and have fun every now and again. Just don't forget that too much fun usually equates to a failing mark.
So you might not live up to your ideal world for a student. But ideal is boring. You won't be challenged with the ideal. You won't have drama in the ideal.
Just think of it this way, perhaps amidst these imperfections of your circumstances, you'll find great friends, one-of-a-kind experiences, young love or better yet, wisdom.
Enjoy this semester.
