THE NEW GRADING SYSTEM
Understanding this new grading system is important for both students and teachers. So for my students as well as their friends, here are some important points to keep in mind with the new grading system. Take note however this is for NON-LAB subjects.
FG + 2TG

92 + 2(90)/ 3 --> 92 + 180/ 3 --> 272/ 3 --> 90.66 or 91
- There are three grading periods: Prelim, Midterm and Finals.
- Each grading period is divided into 50% Class Standing; 30% Periodical Exam; and 20% Project.
- The 50% Class Standing is divided into percentages over Attendance, Recitation, Assignment/Homework, Quizzes depending on the prerogative of the teacher. This is to recognize that each subject may require greater emphasis on certain outputs than others. For example, Writing in the Discipline requires less recitation and therefore the teacher may assign recitation only 5% or 10%. While, Oral Communication requires plenty of recitation and therefore the teacher may assign recitation 25% more or less. Ask your teacher how he/she divides this 50%.
- Attendance belongs to the 50% Class Standing and is assigned a maximum of 5% from the 50%.
- The new system is cumulative meaning your grade during the previous grading period directly affects the current grading period and the totality of your final grade.
FG + 2TG

- The previous is done only for the Midterm and Final grading periods since there is no FG for the prelim period.
92 + 2(90)/ 3 --> 92 + 180/ 3 --> 272/ 3 --> 90.66 or 91
- Attendance and tardiness is marked accordingly in the new system as well. If you are absent, there is an 8 point deduction from an otherwise 100% attendance; and 4 point deduction if you are late. Therefore the following table would apply:
Some Q & A on how I grade my students... |
|
I understand that you have some concerns about grades. Below are some questions you might ask regarding this matter and my corresponding answers.
Q : What is the highest possible grade that you would give to a student?
A : If he/she is worthy enough based on quizzes, major exams, quality of participation in class etc, I would give as high as a grade of 1.0. Although, that would be very difficult to achieve, it is possible. The majority of your grades depends on your ability as a student.

Q : Do I get any warning in the event that I might fail your class?
A : Sometimes when I have enough time to talk with students one-on-one. But it would be better if you come to me personally so you are aware of how you are performing in class.
Q : Do you give considerations to scholarship grantees? A : Absolutely not. As a former scholarship grantee myself, I understand the pressure in maintaining a high GWA. But your final grade will not change just because you hold a scholarship and I take pity on you. You must prove worthy of that scholarship. You might think of me as harsh or strict--that I'm making life too hard on you. Remember that all things in life worth having are worth fighting for. If you think that a grade of 1.0 is worth having than fight for it--work for it, study for it. |
